Evia is the second largest island in Greece, an ideal and exceptional destination for people of all ages.The island of Evia has only become known as a tourist destination for all seasons within the last several years. The route from Athens and the international airport of Eleftherios Venizelos is by the main highway and just one short hour drive away. Access is by bridge from the mainland and there is also several drive on drive off ferry boat services available at other access points.

The island boasts more than nine hundred kilometres of coastline and 1.200 thousand acres of natural forest and woodland. There are endless sand and pebble beaches, areas of natural beauty, archaeological monuments and museums.

History

Most Important Archaeological Sites

Man made his first appearance on Evia and the nearby island of Skyros as early as the Palaeolithic Era. Primitive stone tools have been excavated in New Artaki, some kilometers away from Chalkis,the capital city of the island. Those first inhabitants of Evia are known by the name of Avandes (Abantes). Already in prehistoric times, from 1200 B.C. on, we can document a major wave of new settlers belonging to the Ionian Greek culture.

During the 5th century B.C. it was part of the Athenian league against the Persians, and one of its most important centers was Eretria, , which seems to have contributed ships for the expedition against Tr if Homer’s list in the Iliad is an accurate one. Eretria, together with Chalkis, were the most important city-states in Evia in the centuries preceding historical times. According to legend, the two city-states were involved in a war, which took place sometime in the 9th century B.C., which was one of the first such “civil” wars in antiquity.

The Romans invaded in the 3rd and 2nd century BC and the Venetians came in the 13th century. It also played a major role in the 1821 war of Independence against Ottomans.Acropolis of Athens is just one short hour drive from Evvoia so if you are history enthusiasts worth visit it. Airport to Port of Rafina

Take the direct Regional Bus Service (KTEL) to the port of Rafina. The line departs from the Arrivals Level, opposite the airport hotel (Sofitel)

Alternatively you can hire a taxi(route to the port lasts 15 minutes and cost approximatelly 15 euros)

From Port of Rafina you take the ferry to Marmari(trip  lasts 50 minutes)

By Car

Route from the airport to Rafina lasts 15 minutes.Then you take the ferry to Marmari(trip lasts 50 minutes)

Stathmos Larissis-Kato Patissia(Just in front of the metro station you will find the Regional bus station-Ktel Express Service to Chalkida every 30 minutes.Trip to Chalkida by bus lasts 1 hour)

From Chalkida bus station departures the bus to Lefkadi Kitepark every 25 minutes
